Black Hill Ranger Station

Attendees:

Ron Anderson             Kathie Jarmon

John Bennett               Tom Frederick

Dori Murphy

Treasurer’s Report:

Submitted by Tom Frederick.

Board members discussed and approved treasury as presented.

Ron suggested trying to get grants for the Board and NRCC.  He will check at some veteran groups.  Other sources may be the County, the Rocky Mtn Elk Foundation and the sale of heritage trees or local “heritage” trees.

Big Tree Program

John reported that it was a very busy summer for the state and local Big Tree Program.

John would like to measure some County trees on a Sunday.  He visited and measured/identified some trees on the Mt. Harmon property.  There is a possible State Champion Red Mulberry on the property.

Dori and Kathie will help John measure the local trees.

John presented Big Tree pictures from Mt Harmon, Jim Bardsley’s residence and Baltimore City.

Ron will look at getting forms signed for trees around his neighborhood.

Website Update:

The Board reviewed the local Big Tree List on the site and saw some opportunities to locate some “unfilled” species on the list.

New Business:

Dori and John commented on the success of planting milkweed and attracting Monarch caterpillars and butterflies on each of their property.

Tom reminded the Board of Wayne Merkel’s retirement and party at Rocks State Park.

He informed the Board of Chris Smith’s (Harford County Ranger) pending transfer to the Urban & Community Forestry Program in Annapolis.  Hopefully the Harford position can be filled fairly quickly.

Tom went over some issues with the Critical Area Timber Harvest process and the County.  The issues seem to have been worked out with no substantial changes.  He will go over this at the next meeting also.
