Update on Big Tree Program:

John reported the following at the April 1st meeting:  John Hudock and I have been to Fair Hill twice since our last meeting.  On 3/14, we did 4 trees--northern catalpa (218 pts), sassafras (186 pts), mockernut hickory (210 pts), pignut hickory (214 pts.)  They are all fairly near the Gallaher Road Parking Lot (red balloon, upper left).  Photos of the trees, map of the area, and the tree information (#'s, tree ranking, etc).  In case you are wondering, I carry a metal folding chair so I can rest my knees--you'll see the chair in the mockernut photo on line.  These 4 trees are #10-13.  John

Regarding MBTP activities, John reported that Joli and I re-measured 7 trees in Charles, Anne Arundel & PG Counties on 3/3/20.  All re-measurements are now done in Charles.  There is one each remaining in PG & AA.

Joli and I re-measured 13 trees in Talbot County on 3/19/20.  There are 3 remaining to be done in Talbot.  Two of the trees are now in a probate situation as both owners have died recently; unlikely we will get permission.

My brother Paul and I measured a new southern red oak on Paul's neighbor's property outside Galena.  It scored 322 points.  We took the circumference below the huge burls (see below)

On 3/10/20, I measured 4 new trees in Centreville with Priscilla Mileski, an 83 year old volunteer and member of the Centreville Parks and Rec Advisory Board.  The Board has fund raised and worked with Centreville to create Millstream Trail; a mile paved walking path along the Corsica RiverPhoto of the loblolly pine below.  Map below.  #1 is the loblolly; #2 in a very nice bitternut hickory.

Natural Resources Career Conference (NRCC) Update:

Currently, we are still planning to hold NRCC.  That will change depending on what the public school system decides to do.  Especially Garrett County.  Also Allegany College, the students who will be our counselors have a required Summer program that is usually completed before Camp.  Timing is everything.

Website Update:

Ron reported that he:

Added March minutes

Added April agenda

Corrected spelling of Latin name of CC champion Wild Black Cherry

Put the Rodgers Tavern Willow Oak as Cecil champion

New Business:

Tom reported that currently all Forest Employees are under a Telework Only order except for larger contractor reforestation projects and fire control responses.  The State Nursery stopped taking orders several weeks ago and have been directed to complete the current shipping season asap.  Then they will shutdown also.  A few people are allowed to check facilities and collect mail periodically.

Tom gave an update on the ENSP Salvage Harvest.  Unfortunately the logger reported that prices have fallen and he was not looking to get started in March.  Currently we are in the seasonal restriction for FID habitat (April 1 to July 31).  So unless the logger requests relief from the seasonal restriction he wouldn’t be looking to start until August.

Tom informed the Board that the 8 acre buffer planting at Bohemia River State Park was planted on March 19th.  This was funded by County Critical Area mitigation funds.  The planting went well and the Park was happy with the contractor planting.

Some of the events/programs that have been cancelled include Cabin Fever, Envirothon, White Pine seedling giveaway by County DPW, Backyard Buffers program and St. Mary Anne’s Garden Show.
