Big Tree Program Update:

John reported:

In Cecil, I received a nomination and a signed permission form on 9/15 for an unknown oak inPerryville. I called the owner and asked her to send me some photos of the trunk and leavesfor potential size and species. She said she would but has not as yet.

In Maryland, it was a very busy month with 38 trees visited. Six were re-measured and 31 were new trees. One tree was gone/dead. Geary Schwemmer participated in 10 trees, John Bennett with 8 and Joli McCathran also with 8.

Joli and Sandra Drew measured in Anne Arundel County what later was identified as a Japanese maple; a new State Champion/species (there was one years ago in Baltimore City but it died). Fred Chalfant and Ray Iturralde measured in Baltimore City a green hawthorn. This is a native species; native to areas in the southeast. This is also a new species. Both are planted examples.

Chris and Sharon Winton measured a huge yellow poplar at the Hampton Mansion Historical Site, NPS. It measured at 435 points (multi-trunk).  Joli and Linda Barker re-measured another huge yellow poplar on private property in western Baltimore County at 431 points.  Kathy and Dori may remember this tree from 2011.  Gary measured a very handsome pecan in Westminster at 323 points on private property.  John and Marc Lipnick measured a very handsome American elm at 300 points in Baltimore County.

NRCC Report:

No Report

New Business:

Tom reported:

The ENSP Salvage Harvest is still moving along.  The weather has been somewhat favorable, except for the 5 inch rains.  They are currently working on the east side of Turkey Point Road.  There are a few small areas left on the west side of Turkey Point Road.

One interesting thing to report.  A couple years ago the Univ of Kentucky asked for our assistance in collecting white oak seed for a genetic project on white oaks throughout its native range.  I don't think they received a big response, but I collected some seed from the Calvert Oak.  They requested more seed this year and reported the progeny from the Cecil tree was one of the best performers from seed collected throughout its native range.  I am not sure how much response they received from other states.
