Natural
Resources Career Camp
A
week-long hands-on program for high-school students,
the
NRCC is designed to familiarize young people
with
many activities in Natural Resource-related careers.
Set
in the Hickory Environmental Center
(near
Accident,
learning
about water quality, stream health, and wildlife management
(including bear
management in Maryland);
hands-on
learning GPS and GIS and how it can be used in different
natural
resource disciplines; how to plant, maintain, measure,
harvest, and process forest products -
interacting with and guided by
career professionals who perform these
activities in their day-to-day duties.
Making
new friends and gaining new experiences.
Garrett County Forester Melissa Nash shows campers how to
read a core sample from a tree.
Meeting and talking to many regional college and university
representatives about
the natural resource degree programs they offer;
Campfire on Friday night, last night of camp
developing
forest management plans using principles acquired during the week,
and
group presentations of the plans to students, staff, and parents.
Along
the way students learn about many careers possible within the
Natural
Resources field, and are taught by professionals
who
hold these positions.
